Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay's birth took place on August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise at the age of a small girl. The aunt worked as an overnight nursing assistant so that she could have the chance to learn about art literature or theater. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay saw how art was an effective way to spread the cause of activism. DuVernay had a mother who was socially conscious and showed her how to utilize the arts as a way to express herself. Even though DuVernay was raised within Compton with her family, she was a summer resident living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled Civil Rights marches that occurred across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. DuVernay would use her summers in Alabama to inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied at the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay was a college student at the time she began to become interested in production for the broadcast media. She began her career as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being asked look over the rubbish in the house of one of jury. In the course of her tasks she was dissatisfied with journalism, and shifted into the publicity business. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior assistant to publicity for a film studio that was small shortly after she graduated from the college. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. Neben PR, her agency has created lifestyle networks and advertising campaigns such as The Urban Beauty Collective.
